Roimata Pounamu Tears on Greenstone Memorial

Roimata Pounamu Tears on Greenstone is the largest (greenstone/nephrite/jade) structure in the Southern Hemisphere.

This overwhelming memorial wall stands sentry to the galleries and commemorates all New Zealanders lost in conflict. As tears of mourning and renewed life, flow down the pounamu face, voices echo continuously reading the names of the fallen. This reading of the names is combined with waiata (songs) and karakia (prayers).

In this gallery is a touchscreen for visitors to search for information on lost family or friends. They can select and hear the name read from speakers for their own special moment of remembrance and if they wish or obtain a memorial certificate as a memento of their visit from the library.
